Forging lecture notes
Here
are some highlights from my lecture at GEMS. You can use this as
a beginning guide to Crafting. If you have any questions please
email me at the link below.
Forging consists of six separate skills: crafting, one-handed edged,
one-handed blunt, pole arms, brawling weapons and two-handed weapons
which includes staves. The first skill you must master is making
hammers also known as Crafting. Once you have mastered this skill
you may choose only TWO types of weapons to master. These three
skills together count as ONE artisan skill. Then you are free to
learn ONE other artisan skill such as cobbling or fletching.
To create a weapon you use weapon glyphs which are patterns in which to
form your raw material. The glyphs used for creating hammers are
located on the workbench inside the workshops and are free for your
use. You activate the glyphs by holding the material in your LEFT
hand and staring at the glyph.
In order to forge you must be wearing an apron which you can purchase
at the supply stall near the workshops. The aprons DO NOT go on
over your armor so it is very important to be sure you put your armor
back on before hunting.
At the supply stall there is one type of wooden material and five types
of metals. When learning a craft it is a good idea to use
the bronze bars. These are the cheapest and until you master
crafting a hammer you won’t get one above elegant quality which is
pretty much useless. So throwing these away are fine.
So, go to the supply stall, purchase an apron and some bronze bars then
GO to the workshop. The attendant will automatically take your
300 silvers as you enter. Put on your apron, get your bronze bar
in your left hand and stare at the head-glyph. Once you have
marked the pattern onto your bar you must TURN the grinder. In
the beginning you may have to mark the bar with the pattern many times
before you make your first hammer-head. Once you have a completed
hammer-head, put your leftover bar away and activate the polisher by
LEANing against it. That completes one part of your hammer.
You can create the hammer-handle in the same way using the maoral block
using the handle-glyph. Once you have both parts of your hammer
completed you can activate the vise by TURNing it. This step does
not always work the first time in the beginning either so just be
patient and you will get it with practice.
